How to Choose NDT for Steel Structures? Introduction to UT, MT, RT and PT Weld Inspection

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is vital for steel structure quality control.

The four common testing methods serve different purposes.

UT ultrasonic testing detects internal flaws in thick plates and butt welds.

MT magnetic particle testing finds surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic steel.

RT radiographic testing captures images of internal weld defects, widely used for critical Class 1 welds.

PT penetrant testing checks open surface defects on non-magnetic materials.

Inspection schemes are selected based on weld class, load condition and code requirements to guarantee safe and reliable welds.
